Before You Go
How to Get to Ios
There is no airport on Ios, so the island is reached by ferry.
Most visitors arrive by:
- Athens (Piraeus Port) – approximately 4–8 hours depending on the ferry.
- Santorini – around 35–60 minutes.
- Paros, Naxos, Mykonos and other Cyclades islands via regular ferry connections during the summer season.

If you’re travelling during July or August, it’s a good idea to book your ferry tickets in advance, as popular routes can sell out!
Is 4 Days in Ios Enough?
Absolutely.
Four days gives you enough time to experience the best of the island without feeling rushed.
Hot tip: Check out what events are on in Ios before booking like the famous Sunset White Parties or Floatopia Parties at Harmony Ios once a month.
You’ll have time to relax on beautiful beaches, wander through Chora, enjoy local food, discover hidden gems, and experience the famous nightlife—all while soaking up the laid-back Cycladic atmosphere.
However if you prefer slow travel, and want to explore the small islands off Ios as well, then allow a 6+ days min.
Whether you’re island hopping through Greece or making Ios your main destination, it’s easy to see why so many travellers return year after year.

Getting Around Ios
One of the best things about Ios is how easy it is to explore.
Public Buses
The local bus network connects most of the island’s popular destinations, including:
- Ios Port (Ormos)
- Chora
- Mylopotas Beach
- Koumbara Beach
- Several southern beaches during peak season
Cash is always preferred but you can also pay with card (2026 bus tickets cost €2.20 in Ios). During peak season (July -Aug) the buses run every 15mins going from the Port, through town, and down to the beach all the way to FarOut beach club.
Scooter or ATV Rental
We highly recommend including an ATV or scooter rental in your budget.
Suitable for anyone with a car licence, hiring a small ATV is a must. Even though you can walk (20mins down/up hill) or bus to the beach, hiring and ATV will save you lots of time.
If you’re planning to explore the best swim spots in Ios, quieter beaches, different restaurants, or scenic viewpoints, renting a scooter or ATV gives you easy access to more of the island and more freedom of choice.
Peak season pricing varies (2026 prices in peak season averaged €20+ a day).
Just make sure you have the appropriate driver’s licence and always wear a helmet!
Should You Bring Cash?
Yes.
Don’t worry, most hotels, restaurants and beach bars accept cards, however, cash is still preferred in these islands.
It’s worth carrying some cash for:
- Local bakeries
- Beach kiosks
- Smaller tavernas
- Bus fares (where applicable)
- Tips
- Small purchases
You’ll find ATMs in town in Chora and at the port, but they can become busy during peak season.
Where to Stay in Ios
Choosing the right area can completely shape your trip.
Chora
Yes it’s right in the heart of Ios that comes to life when the sun sets. Its right in the middle between the Port – where you arrive, and Mylopotas beach. Both a 15-20min walk up/down hills (Keep that in mind when carrying bags!) or 5min bus ride .
Think restaurants, bars, streets filled with music and people dressed up for a night out.
Perfect if you want to be within walking distance of restaurants, bars, boutique shops and nightlife.
Chora is ideal for first-time visitors who enjoy being in the heart of the action but don’t forget – the nightlife doesn’t quieten until early hours of the morning so if you prefer peace and quiet, you might be happier to stay a little further from the centre.
Mylopotas Beach
One of the island’s most popular beach areas, and where you will find Harmony restaurant & bar, cliff side at one of the best swim spots in Ios, and an all time favourite hang out for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Mylopotas is ideal if your priority is the sea, swimming, beach bars, sun baking, cafes and seaside restaurants, water sports and sunset cocktails.
And it’s an easy and short 5min bus ride into the centre
Ormos (The Port)
Great for travellers arriving by ferry, and who aren’t looking to have a busy stay. Ios little port area is peaceful and surrounded with great restaurants.
Those staying one or two nights, or anyone looking for convenient transport connections and waterfront dining.
An easy 5min bus ride into the centre and 10mins to Mylopotas beach.
Your Perfect 4-Day Ios Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive & Explore Chora
We recommend choosing the early ferry if you have the option.
In peak season the ferries are very busy! and it’s not uncommon for ferries to run late so allow for that extra time.
After arriving by ferry into Ios Port, take the bus or book a taxi to your accom because walking up these hills with suitcases is not for the faint hearted.
Check into your accommodation and take some time to settle in before exploring the island’s beautiful capital.
Before 6pm the town can be hot and tired, So we recommend spending the evening from 6pm, wandering through the whitewashed laneways of Chora, discovering boutique shops, hidden staircases and charming blue-domed churches.
Head to top church for sunset about 8pm (The church at the very top of the hill. You can’t miss it.)
A 7-10min walk uphill for an incredible sunset view (You can ask anyone for directions and they can help you.
Just keep heading up stairs and you’ll generally stumble across it regardless of what way you go)
On the way down, Stop for dinner or a gelato before browsing local artisan stores.
Finish your first evening with a few cocktails in one of the lively bars that make Ios famous.
Day 2 – Beach Day at Mylopotas
Today is all about relaxing.
Take the bus or walk down to Mylopotas Beach, one of the most famous beaches in the Cyclades.
Spend the day:
- Free swim spot at Harmony with lounges, day beds, hammocks or bean bags + Food & Cold drinks while you sunbake.
- Swimming in crystal-clear water
- Hiring paddleboards or kayaks
- Relaxing on a day bed (generally €20 to hire for the day)
- Enjoying beachside cocktails
If you’re looking for s fun day out beach hoping, Head to Meltemi Watersports at Mylopotas Beach that will take you out for a couple hours around to other swim spots or if you’re feeling more adventurous, try tubing or one of the water sports activities before watching the sunset over the Aegean on the deck of Harmony Ios with live music.
Day 3 – Hidden Beaches & Local Experiences
Now it’s time to discover another side of Ios.
Booking a car or ATV in advance if you are planning to visit in peak season! As sson as you arrive to the Island or before you arrive for the best prices and so you don’t miss out. It’s time to explore some of the island’s quieter beaches and scenic coastal roads.
Start your day early!
Head to Paralia Magganari beach where you will find an incredible swim spot and cafes with seafood. Start your day swimming, relaxing and enjoying breakfast.
In opposite direction, heading back past Chora and past the Port, Paralia Koumpara beach is a quite spot with day beads, food and drink.
Along the way you’ll discover:
- Hidden coves
- Traditional chapels
- Incredible viewpoints
- Peaceful swimming spots away from the crowds
Return to Chora in the evening to drop the bikes off, just in time for dinner – we recommend asking the locals here wheres to go for traditional Greek cuisine.
Day 4 – One Last Morning Before Departure
Before catching your ferry, enjoy one final swim, freddo espresso and breakfast overlooking the sea at Harmony.
If time allows:
- Visit a local bakery.
- Pick up souvenirs.
- Enjoy one last swim.
- Take a stroll around the harbour.
- Try a morning seaside yoga class
Head the the port 1hour before departure, and enjoy a coffee at the cafe while you wait. Some ferries will start boarding 1hr before departure especially during the busy summer months.
Travel Tips for Visiting Ios
- Before June many places are still closed. Still worth visiting if you want a quiet relaxed trip. May can still be cold on the Islands as well.
- July – Aug are the busiest months on the Island – And the hottest!
- September – October for the best weather.
- Reserve in advance if traveling in July; Accommodation, Ferry tickets & ATV hire
- Pack comfortable walking shoes, as Chora has many steps and cobbled streets.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and stay hydrated during summer.
