If you’re wondering whether Ios is worth visiting in 2027, the short answer is yes — especially if you want a Greek island that combines beautiful beaches, traditional Cycladic scenery, restaurants, nightlife and plenty to do during the day.
Ios has a reputation as a party island, but that’s only one side of it.
Couples, families, groups, wedding guests and travellers looking for a slower Greek island holiday are having a completely different experience.
1. Ios is more than a party island
Chora is famous for nightlife, we aren’t going to lie to you, but you don’t need to party to enjoy Ios.
Because of Ios famous night life that you will find a very different experience to some of the other Cycladic islands that are very relaxed, and some not offering a lot of tourist activities even in peak season.
Because Ios has been a popular tourist destination for many years, it offers a unique blend of Greek island culture with international community vibes bringing travellers and families from all over the world from Australia, to Norway.
You’ll find plenty to see and do, along with a diverse food scene ranging from sushi and international cuisine to traditional, authentic Greek food.
Getting around the island is also relatively easy, making it simple to explore beyond the main tourist areas and discover more of what Ios has to offer.
The beaches & restaurants are worth going to Ios alone.
You’ll probably spend most of your days swimming, but also taking boat trips, trying watersports, hiking, eating, watching sunsets or enjoying live music.
2. There is no airport in Ios
Everyone arrives by ferry. The Pros to this are that everyone that comes to Ios often did so very intentionally and unlike Santorini or some other large islands with airports, it does not bring in the same large crowds even during the peak seasons.
Ios has ferry connections with Athens, Santorini and other Cycladic islands including Naxos, Paros and Mykonos, making it easy to include in a Greek island-hopping itinerary. Current schedules can be checked through Ferryhopper.
3. Mylopotas Beach deserves a full day
Mylopotas is one of the best-known beaches in Ios and only a short 5min bus from Chora.
Swim, relax on the beach, try watersports and stop somewhere for breakfast, lunch or cocktails.
Harmony overlooks Mylopotas Bay, so you can start with breakfast, head down for a swim and return later for cocktails, dinner and live music.

4. Chora isn’t just for nightlife
Visit Chora in the late afternoons and after sunset to explore its whitewashed lanes, shops, churches and classic Cycladic architecture.
You can watch a spectacular sunset from top church – Panagia Gremiotissa beautiful views across the island before deciding whether you’re staying for dinner, cocktails or the nightlife.
5. Explore beyond Mylopotas
If you’re staying for several days, visit some of Ios’ quieter beaches.
Manganari, Psathi and Agia Theodoti offer a different experience from the busier Mylopotas area. These beaches are peaceful, secluded and have crystal clear water that looks like its out of a movie!
6. You don’t necessarily need a car
If you’re staying around the Port, Chora or Mylopotas, you can use the island’s summer bus network that runs every 15min in peak season months. The peak season months in Ios are June, July (the busiest month), & August.
A car, scooter or ATV becomes more useful, saves you time, helps you avoid the heat and allows you to do more on the Island like experience a cheese & wine tasting at Diaselis Cheesery, or if you want to independently explore quieter beaches and remote parts of Ios.
7. Four or five days is a good amount of time
You can experience Ios in four days, but five or six gives you time to do it slowly and get to those famous locations like Flat Rock, Never Bay, or even experience events like the Greek celebrations – the Panegiri in Aug & Sep or attend a Harmony White party or Floatopia event that are only once a month!

Allow time for Mylopotas, Chora, another beach, a boat or activity day and at least one day without much of an itinerary, sometimes the best experiences are unplanned!
8. Ios is great for couples
Ios can easily be romantic without feeling like a traditional honeymoon destination.
Think sunset drinks, beach days, boat trips, long dinners, hidden beaches and exploring Chora together.
It’s also becoming an increasingly appealing option for destination weddings and group celebrations.
9. Summer events are part of the experience
Check what’s happening while you’re on the island aside from international DJ events.
