May: Quiet Start to the Season
May is the beginning of the summer season in Ios.
The island is quieter, with little to none events and many seasonal businesses are only just prepping for open day and few are already open.
A beautiful peaceful time of year when this town is waking up slowly from its sleepy winter.
If you want to avoid the heat, the weather is a lot cooler early May and you will find yourself wearing pants and jumpers whilst enjoying clear sunny days, however be prepared for limited activities and do some research to find out when your bucket list places are going to be opening.

It’s a great time for exploring Chora, hiking in cooler climates and enjoying quieter beaches.
The sea is cooler than later in summer, so if swimming and long beach days are your priority, June onwards may suit you better.
Best for: Chilling, Cooler climates, cheaper prices, couples, exploring, hiking, quiet beaches and avoiding peak crowds.
June: One of the Best Times to Visit Ios
June is when Ios really starts to feel like summer.
Every year the weather is different but by late June the jumpers start to come off!
Restaurants, beach venues and seasonal activities are open, the sea is warming up and the island has plenty of atmosphere without the full intensity of July and August.
You’ll also notice the international summer crowd beginning to arrive. Irish travellers are commonly seen from June onwards, alongside visitors from Australia, the UK and elsewhere in Europe as schools and universities begin their summer breaks. Ireland’s Department of Education notes that exact summer holiday dates vary between schools, so these visitor patterns aren’t fixed from year to year. (Government of Ireland)
Best for: couples, groups, beach holidays, nightlife without peak crowds and first-time visitors.
For many travellers, June is one of the best months to visit Ios.
July: Peak International Summer
By July, Ios is firmly in summer mode.
Expect hot weather, busy beaches, a lively Chora and more nightlife. The international DJs get bigger, the crowd grows throughout the month as European summer holidays begin.
For example, many English schools continue into the second half of July, meaning late July generally falls more firmly into the European family summer-holiday period. Exact dates vary between schools and regions. (Barnet Council)
July is also when the Meltemi winds become more noticeable across the Cyclades.
Strong wind doesn’t necessarily mean bad weather — you can have beautiful sunshine and a strong breeze at the same time. However, wind can affect boat trips, ferries and which beaches are most comfortable that day.

Best for: groups, nightlife, trendy bar vibes, Live music events, party events, busy beach days and travellers wanting the full Ios summer atmosphere.
August: Peak Greek Summer
August is one of the busiest and hottest times to visit Ios as well and more families and couple start arriving for wedding season.
It’s hot, lively and almost every seasonal business is operating. You’ll also notice more Greek visitors holidaying on the islands during the traditional Greek summer holiday period.
One particularly important date is 15 August, the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
Ios holds a festival at Panagia Gremiotissa in Chora on 15 August, with further traditional celebrations taking place later in the month, including festivals honouring Agios Ioannis. (Wonder Greece)
If you’re visiting during August, look beyond the nightlife and keep an eye out for local panigiria, cultural events and celebrations every Aug – Sep.
August can also bring stronger Meltemi winds, so check conditions when planning sailing trips, outdoor celebrations or weddings.

September: Families, Couples, Weddings & Slower Travel
September is one of our favourite times to experience Ios.
The sea has had all summer to warm up, days remain warm and the island gradually becomes more relaxed as European school and university holidays finish.
Most seasonal venues are still operating during the very earlier part of the month, making September particularly good for travellers who want summer without quite as much peak-season intensity. But this is also is when some venues are now prepping for close or starting to close. Be sure to follow us on social media and do your research so you dont miss out on your favourite places.
Ios also has traditional celebrations in Agia Theodoti and Paleokastro on 7–8 September. (Wonder Greece)
Best for: Families, couples, great sunsets,destination weddings, adults, romantic trips, swimming, food, cocktails and a more relaxed island experience.
For weddings in Ios, June and September are particularly good options — warm weather, beautiful evenings and plenty for guests to experience before and after the wedding.

Late September & October: When Does Ios Start Closing?
Ios is a seasonal island, so there isn’t one official date when everything closes, the businesses just gauge it by how busy it is that time of year. Its starting to get cold now, lots of the seasonal staff working on the Islands are also going back home or to their winter jobs and studies, so many place find it easier to close.
Instead, restaurants, bars, hotels and beach venues gradually finish their seasons as visitor numbers decrease.
By late September, you’ll start seeing some seasonal businesses close. By October, Ios becomes considerably closed down and quieter with fewer tourist-focused venues and activities are operating.
That doesn’t mean you can’t visit — but Ios in October is a very different experience from Ios in July.
If particular warm summer days, restaurants, nightlife, activities or venues are important to your holiday, check directly with businesses before booking a late-season trip.
When Is Ios Windiest?
Wind is part of summer life in the Cyclades.
The Meltemi is the seasonal northerly wind associated with the Aegean summer and is particularly relevant during the peak summer period and these can effect things like weddings and functions or ferries and boat trips.
If you arrive during a windy spell:
- Check conditions before booking boat trips or even driving around to other sides of the island as winds get stronger the higher you go and it can be dangerous and scary when driving on small scooters or ATVs.
- Speak to the locals and ask which beaches are more sheltered
- Allow some flexibility around ferry travel
- Consider wind when planning outdoor weddings and events
And don’t panic if your weather app shows wind, its no surprise and the local businesses work with it every year. Ask someone local where to go — different parts of Ios can offer very different conditions.

When Is the Best Time for a Wedding in Ios?
For destination weddings, we’d look particularly closely at June and September.
June
Long days, warm weather, a lively island and the beginning of the main summer season.
September
Whilst we love the difference seasons and phases of our Greek Summer, End of August in September is one of the nicest times across many islands.
The heat of the day if more bareable and shorter, nights start to cool whilst still having warmer sea temperatures, beautiful evenings and sunsets with a happy and more relaxed atmosphere after peak summer.
July and August can absolutely work too, and they are a lot of fun! But if your considering a wedding or function and events, couples should consider the stronger summer heat, lack of shade, shelft from Meltemi winds, busier accommodation and peak-season crowds.

For a first trip to Ios, Mid June, Late Aug or early September are hard to beat if you want a balance of beaches, restaurants, nightlife and exploring. Youll also find prices decrease in September as the island slows down and starts to close.
For the busiest, hottest and most energetic version of Ios, come in July or August.
